Two ways to cover what Original Medicare doesn’t
Most people we meet are choosing between these two. Here’s the short version of each.
Medicare Supplements
Keeps Original Medicare and fills in the gaps. Most people we work with choose Plan G.
- See any provider that accepts Medicare
- A predictable, stable monthly cost
- You add a separate Part D plan for medications
Advantage Plans
Replaces Original Medicare with one plan from a private carrier, usually at a lower cost.
- Often includes dental, vision and Rx coverage
- Lower monthly cost, with copays and deductibles
- Enrollment runs October 15th – December 7th
Medicare Supplements
A Medicare Supplement plan is a Medicare Product that helps cover what Original Medicare (Part A and B) does not cover. The most popular plan we sell is Plan G.
Medicare Supplements are designed to supplement Original Medicare. These plans can help you fill the gaps in coverage that Original Medicare doesn’t cover.
One of the main benefits of Medicare Supplements is that they provide a predictable and stable cost for healthcare. Another benefit is that they offer more flexibility in choosing healthcare providers, as they allow you to see any healthcare provider that accepts Medicare, regardless of whether they are in-network or out-of-network.
With a supplement plan, you will also need a Part D prescription plan to cover medications. While we don’t currently sell Part D plans, we also assist with enrolling in Part D prescription plans.
With a variety of Medicare Supplements available, HSM Insurance Group can help you find the right Medigap plan for your needs and budget. We specialize in Medicare Supplements and can help you compare different plans to find the one that best suits your needs and budget. We can also assist you in enrolling in a plan that fits your needs.
Already on a supplement plan?
If you are not new to Medicare and are already on a supplement plan, you can change to another supplement plan at any time during the year, since there is no dedicated election for supplements. Please note that if you are already on a supplement plan and trying to change to a different carrier or plan, you will be subject to medical underwriting by the new insurance carrier. Effective 2026 the birthday rule is now in place allowing you to change to identical supplement plan with a different carrier without going through medical underwriting. It can be done 31 days before or after your birthday.
Advantage Plans
Medicare Advantage Plans, also known as Medicare Part C, are Medicare Products offered by private insurance companies as an alternative to Original Medicare (Part A and B), combining all your benefits into one plan.
These plans are designed to fill in the gap from Original Medicare, but with added benefits such as dental, vision, and prescription drug coverage.
One of the main benefits of Medicare Advantage plans is that they often have lower out-of-pocket costs than Original Medicare, because they typically include a cap on out-of-pocket costs. Many plans also include additional benefits such as gym memberships and wellness programs, and built-in prescription drug coverage, so you do not need to enroll in a separate Part D plan.
Advantage plans serve the similar purpose of helping cover what Original Medicare does not, they just do so in a different way. They are offered at a much lesser cost in comparison to supplements and can include added benefits such as dental coverage, membership discounts, and built in Rx coverage. While supplement policies don’t have co pays or deductibles, Advantage Plans typically do.
To learn more about these plans, please contact us to schedule an appointment to sit down and discuss them in detail. We will be happy to walk you through how they work and create a comparison between an Advantage Plan and a Medicare Supplement plan, so that you can make a well informed decision.
When you can enroll
Please note that if you are not new to Medicare, enrolling in an Advantage plan can only be done during the annual election period from October 15th – December 7th.

Medicare questions
What is the difference between a Medicare Supplement and an Advantage Plan?

While we don’t currently sell Part D plans, we also assist with enrolling in Part D prescription plans.
Can I switch supplement plans at any time of year?
